American Ginseng roots come in many different lengths and sizes. The shape and length of the American Ginseng root is dependent on the type of soil it is grown in. Sandy topsoil allows for the roots to grow downwards more easily which makes them longer, while clay and heavier soils dampers the depth of how far down the root can grow, so the root typically grows short and wide. Since all of the roots are grown in Wisconsin for at least three to four years they all share about the same equal nutritional value. However, large size and above roots tend to be grown four years or longer (age can increase the potency measured by ginsenosides). Many consumers prefer these bigger roots, because they look more impressive as a gift, while others prefer pearl-shaped roots because of their uniformity.
